challenge

frog had the opportunity to come and teach the entrepreneurs at the Texas Medical Center for Innovation about a key skill - how to conduct design research in a healthcare setting.

Outcome

We put together a full day workshop that taught entrepreneurs the key skills they need in order to prepare, conduct and synthesize their gatherings to tangible, useful insights that can inform their designs. The workshop was divided into three key sections, and consisted of the following:

  • FRAME: how to prepare for research to optimize results.
    • Recruiting can be challenging - the proper exclusion criteria for your screener can make or break the research.
    • Write a research plan that on a high level hones in on your goals so that you make the most out of your time.
    • Write a research guide, that helps keep your conversations with patients, HCPs and caregivers focused.
  • LEARN: how to make the most of your time in field with your research participants.
    • What to bring in order to properly and professionally document your findings.
    • How to conduct an interview, the art of digging deeper, and asking non-leading questions.
    • How to ensure you're treating your participants with respect - using empathy not sympathy.
  • MAKE: how to use tools to translate your findings into tangible design solutions.
    • Using worksheets specifically designed to map out users journeys, mental models and care ecosystems.
    • Synthesis using a rigorous method of organizing post-it's with snippets of data.
    • How to build prototypes and iterate on your designs.
